Music & Talks: The Refugee Crisis in Greece

Having returned from Chios almost four weeks ago and with four weeks before the next trip to Greece, I'm delighted to announce an Outreach Concert that will be taking place in Surrey, England.

In essence, back in January I went out to Greece to work with an NGO called Be Aware and Share. They provide education to refugee children aged 6 - 22 on Chios, an island just 4km from Turkey.

Having intended to stay 2 months, I ended up remaining almost six. On Chios, I met hundreds of asylum-seekers and witnessed the shocking reality of the crisis.

Because of this, I’m organising a series of outreach events here in England to increase engagement. The concerts will consist of talks, videos and poetry, along with a programme of music that evokes something of the countries and situations these refugees come from and arrive to.

In early August, I am returning to Athens, Greece, where I am working with The Unmentionables, an NGO sourcing and distributing underwear, sexual health and intimate hygiene products. At the same time, I'll be continuing to research the feasibility of kick-starting an education project aimed at older teenagers in Athens.

These concerts are an opportunity to learn more about these projects and NGOs, to enjoy art and music that has arisen right from this situation, and to support basic living costs for these next projects.

This concert takes place on 23rd July, 18:00 at The Wisdom of God Church in Lower Kingswood, Surrey. More info on Facebook!

Entry is free! The evening will last approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes!
